Do you ever wonder why so many network marketers struggle to build their downlines and build a successful organization while their upline seem to be making money hand over fist? After all, it is the uplines that are teaching the MLM marketing system that most network marketers are using, right?

We all know “the drill” in terms of the MLM marketing system most network marketers are taught to use: Make your ‘list of 100,’ hold home parties, pass out fliers, product samples and DVDs to anyone who will listen to you, and talk up how much money people can make by getting in this most amazing business opportunity.

What most network marketers experience from doing all this are two things: frustration and a major dent in their bank account.

So why do so few of those network marketers experience the same success that their upline has? The answer is very simple: Their upline is not using the same MLM marketing system they are telling their downline to use. What I always tell understandably frustrated network marketers is to do what their upline DOES, not what their upline says.

So what is wrong with the MLM marketing system that most uplines teach? There are several major flaws in this system:

1. You Are Perpetually Chasing People: For business reasons (and because it’s just plain no fun), you don’t want to beg and plead with people trying to convince them why they SHOULD join your business. If you understand marketing, then you know that all this produces is a business filled with opportunity seekers or people who (because they are your friends and family) only joined because they wanted to help you out. This will result in a very high drop-out rate. It is not the foundation of a strong and growing organization. What you want is to have others approaching YOU for more information about your products, services and opportunity.

2. You Are Not Positioning Yourself Correctly: Perhaps the biggest reason the MLM marketing system most uplines teach does not work, is that it never positions the network marketer the right way. Most uplines teach people to defer to people in their upline when it comes down to promoting the product. They will tell people to position THEM (the upline) as the experts by having 3-way calls or having them speak at the home meetings. This is a major mistake. As a network marketer, one of your primary goals should be to position yourself as the expert — as the leading authority who is able to solve the problem people are having. When you do that, you will have people approaching YOU instead of you having to approach them. Positioning is key.

3. It Is FAR Too Inefficient: From an efficiency and time-management standpoint, the MLM marketing system that most uplines teach could not be less effective. Simply put: Even if it did work, it works way TOO SLOWLY! You can’t possibly build a big enough organization fast enough. You need to be able to put your business, at least in part, on autopilot. I can assure you that is what successful uplines are doing.

By positioning yourself as the expert and putting an MLM marketing system in place that has people contacting you (instead of you chasing them), your business will grow much more quickly and efficiently. Why?

Well when you provide information on a solution you can offer (as opposed to about a business opportunity), then everyone who contacts you has already “weeded out” a big number of people who would never get in your business. First, their guard was down. Your tools (lead capture page, free report etc) will separate out the serious from the tire kickers.

You also won’t encounter nearly as many of the typical “objection” statements — When prospects are reaching out to you they don’t say, “I need to speak with my spouse” or “I need to do some research” or “the timing isn’t just right.”

Also, when you, through your copy, tools and technology (whether it is direct mail, the Internet or any other “tool”) position yourself as the expert, it will do virtually all of the “leg work” and heavy lifting for you. Talk about more efficient. When others do approach you either via email or by calling you, all the “hard work” had been done (this is key). You will have already positioned yourself as the expert, so when someone contacts you, you will already know exactly why they are calling. Having an MLM system like this in place is like putting your business on steroids compared to the way most network marketers are taught to grow their business.

When creating an MLM marketing system, trying to manage all the different aspects of it and the tasks involved in putting it together can seem overwhelming at times. So it is very important to know the priority of and the order in which you should work on accomplishing each component. Being able to prioritize all the “to do’s” will not only make you much more efficient in getting things accomplished, but will also help to alleviate a lot of these feelings of overwhelm.

If you are just getting started putting your own MLM marketing system together, however, then you might feel a little lost as to where to start. If this sounds like you, then this should be some helpful information for you.

When creating an MLM marketing system and figuring out what steps to take, the single variable that you should be focused on is lead generation…not buying leads, not holding house parties…but learning the art and science of generating your own leads.

You want to focus specifically on generating leads who are people who are looking for more information about your products and the SOLUTION it can provide. Sounds almost too simple, but in all reality that is the real “secret” to building a successful business: People buy from experts and authority figures they trust.

What makes an MLM marketing system work? What makes one MLM business grow more quickly than others (or grow versus those that remain stagnant)? Usually the difference between these is the number of leads that the business owner regularly and continuously is able to generate.

The fact of the matter is that the person who learns how to, and focuses on, generating an endless supply of leads on a daily basis will ALWAYS build their MLM business faster and better than the person who spends all their time creating lists of their warm market, passing out product samples, etc.

It doesn’t matter what methods for doing it, generating leads and building a list should be at the very top of your priority list in your MLM marketing system. Period.

Once you have a list, the possibilities and the potential for your business to grow are limitless. In the beginning, though, don’t worry about all the stuff you WILL do to market to your list. Focus exclusively in the beginning in building your list through effective lead generation.

There is a reason why many people cringe when they hear the term “network marketing” or “MLM.” Network marketing has been sold to people as THE “get rich quick scheme” and the easy road to wealth. The fact that it has been estimated that less than 5% of all network marketers succeed should be enough to convince you that such is not the case.

Am I trying to discourage you from getting involved in network marketing? Not at all!

What I am trying to show you, however, is that there is clearly a flaw or two in the traditional methods taught to market and build a successful network marketing business. It is these same “flawed” marketing methods taught to people over and over again which accounts for the unbelievably high failure rate among network marketing business owners.

I want to go through one of these marketing mistakes in this article, specifically I want to tell you why leading with the business opportunity is a mistake.

When you sign up into a network marketing business, one of the first things many people get trained to do is how to approach people and present them with the business opportunity the company can provide. You are told to bring along samples and brochures — and even flip charts and multi-media presentations — all to show people how much money they can make by getting involved with that network marketing company.

People will tell you not to try to hide the business opportunity behind the product, but instead to always LEAD WITH THE OPPORTUNITY. Go right for their desire for easy success and easy money…

If the overall failure rate of network marketing businesses doesn’t alone tell you this strategy must not work too well, let me give you two of the biggest reasons why leading with the business opportunity is something you should NEVER do. The first big problem about leading with the opportunity in a network marketing company is that you will attract people who are just looking for an opportunity. While that might seem like the kind of person for whom you should look, it actually isn’t.

Let’s assume that your network marketing company is one of the best of the best out there. It has a phenomenal product and a top-notch comp plan. Why not trumpet these attributes and, in fact, LEAD with them when you are trying to promote your business?

The reason is that your company, no matter how great it or its comp plan is, will not always be the greatest opportunity and/or comp plan out there. When you solicit and bring people into your business who are focused primarily on the business opportunity, then if (and likely WHEN) a better business opportunity comes along, they will leave your business and pursue that other opportunity.

When you build your network marketing business completely around the promotion of the business opportunity, you will by definition be building your business upon the foundation of people who have no loyalty to either the product or your company. This is not a recipe for building a strong and profitable organization.

The other reason that leading with the opportunity is a mistake, is that you are MISSING out on some of the best, most long-term and most profitable people you can get (and that you need) to build a massive network marketing organization.

When you lead with the benefits of your product, and even with the product itself, in the context of you being the expert about the issue for which people buy the product, then you will attract people who (1) are interested in the solution or the help that the product provides and/or (2) in using or consuming the product themselves. These people can become the most lucrative distributors in your downline, and be the backbone of an extremely profitable network marketing business.

Remember that just because you don’t LEAD with the opportunity, does not mean you won’t get people involved in the opportunity. It is all a question of WHICH people…

Think about why that would be the case. All of these people have an attachment not to an opportunity, but to the exact product you are selling. That means they truly believe in the product, will keep using the product and will be loyal. All of these are ingredients for a very strong and profitable downline (and network marketing business).
